If you were to have asked me two years ago what a diaper sprayer was, I would have looked at you like you were crazy and said “a what”. Ask me now, and it is my favorite cloth diaper accessory, something that I use each day. While I could live without my diaper sprayer, and have while traveling, I prefer not to because it makes cleaning and rinsing out my diapers super easy! In this article, I will give you a few reasons why you should take the plunge (no pun intended) and get your own diaper sprayer, as well as tips on buying a diaper sprayer.
Why do I need a diaper sprayer?
- It makes rinsing poopy diapers very easy. Simply spray the poop into the toilet and flush away. End of story. I even used my diaper sprayer on breastfeeding poop, as well. Works like a charm! Thoroughly rinsing your diapers after poop will also help to prevent staining.
- It is easily attached to the side of your toilet and does not stick out like a sore thumb. The design is sleek and smooth, yet practical.
- It’s a conversation starter! While I mentioned above that it is sleek and trim hanging on your toilet, I am sure people will still wonder what the beautiful piece of chrome hanging on your toilet is. This is when you introduce them to cloth diapers and just how “fun” it is to use the sprayer!
- It can act as a multipurpose tool. My diaper sprayer is in reach of the bath tub. I have used it on multiple occasions to clean my tub and even my dog. Never underestimate the power of creativity with your diaper sprayer!
Tips on buying a diaper sprayer:
- Don’t skimp out when buying a diaper sprayer! This is an item you will be using on a daily basis for the next 2+ years if you cloth diaper 1 child. Invest in a quality one that will last.
- Make sure you get a diaper sprayer that has an adjustable pressure valve. This adjustable spray allows for even some of the most stubborn poops to be lifted off the diaper at its highest setting. I have seen sprayers that barely trickle out at their highest setting, and this does not help to get the diapers clean!
- I prefer a diaper sprayer that is made of durable materials such as chrome. Not only does it look stylish, but it will hold up to the everyday use.
So what about you? Do you own a diaper sprayer? Why or why not have you chosen to use one? Do you find it as helpful as I have?

I’ve been doing a lot of reflecting lately, as my daughter’s birthday approached. Reflecting on my due date, on the circumstances leading up to her birth, on the pregnancy and then those first few weeks after she was born that just seemed like a blur. It feels as though it is still December 2011, but suddenly here we are, December 2012, and I have a one year old.
My daughter, Penelope “Penny” Ann, was born at 1:05am on December 16, 2011. She was a skinny 6lbs 12oz, though I wasn’t surprised by the weight, and only 18 inches long. You might think she would’ve stayed skinny, but that girl beefed up. Now, at a year, she is about 11lbs and 30 inches tall. My little baby isn’t so little anymore.
I remember bringing her home and having no idea what to do with her. Well, other than feed her and change her diaper, in any case. But what does one do with a newborn? I ended up watching a lot of TV as I recovered from my surprise c-section with her lying on my chest, her favorite place to be. She was a mama’s girl from the start, even if I tried to pass her off as a daddy’s girl. She still is all about her mommy.
Each month on the 16th I would prop her up somewhere in cute clothes and take another photo. One month, two months, three months… I had no idea that one year would sneak up on me like this. I feel like it was just September and my baby had just started crawling. Now I have a walking, talking, one year old. A toddler, in most cases. My baby is a toddler now.
I was never one of those people who was stuck in the past, reminiscing about days gone by and about my baby growing up too fast. I like to live in the present and keep a keen eye on the future. Sometimes, though, I give myself those few moments to reflect on how far we’ve come, to flip through photos of her as a newborn, with her hair sticking out and her skinny legs all over the place. What a doll, my Penny was, and still is.
Here I am now, a mom of a one year old, and proud of it. I am soaking in every moment of this little girl’s life. I am laughing with her father while she toddles around the room blabbering about this and that. I am chasing after her as she is running into the street for the millionth time. I am cuddling with her in the morning when she just isn’t ready to wake up all the way while we watch a show or two. I am letting myself think about the past year with happiness. look how far we’ve come, baby girl, and look how much we still have ahead of us. I am proud to be a mom of a one year old.

Q: How have cloth diapers changed your life? I first switched to cloth diapers because my husband was finishing his military career and going back to school full-time. We were going to be losing an income and we needed to cut monthly living costs as much as possible. That is when I finally listened to my sister about cloth diapers. It has been amazing, because not only has it saved us a lot of money, but I have loved how the cloth diapers work so much better than the disposable diapers worked!
We have far fewer leaks with cloth diapers, thus my daughters clothes last a lot longer, and I don’t have to wash her laundry as often! I was surprised that it wasn’t as hard as I originally thought, and I’m not always a slave to cloth diaper laundering! I have fallen in love with all the different colors and print options that are available through cloth diapers – they are much more fun than regular disposable diapers.
The biggest benefit of cloth diapers is not having to worry about the chemicals in disposable diapers. We don’t have to deal with diaper rash quite as often as when my daughter was in disposable diapers, so I wish I had used cloth 8 years ago when my oldest son was a baby. I will definitely be using cloth with all future children, as cloth diapering has made a vast change in my outlook on child raising and I no longer think that what everyone else is doing is always the best choice.
Q: This summer I am looking forward to….
Allowing my daughter run around in a shirt and diaper! With the warm weather, I won’t have to wrap her up in a lot of layers to keep her warm, thus we can show of her adorable cloth diapers more. When people actually see the diapers, they start to think maybe cloth isn’t so bad! It’s a great conversation starter. My kids are probably most excited to bring out the swimming pool, sprinklers and water guns and have a lot of outdoor water fun!
Q: The most unusual thing in my diaper bag or purse is…..
You mean besides the constant supply of fruit snacks, diapers, wipes, little diaper bags to wrap up the dirty diapers, little treats and toys to keep my daughter entertained anytime we leave the house? Yes, I have both my purse and diaper bag stocked with all of that at all times! I’d probably have to say the 6 different lip balms, as I am always misplacing and losing them! I have to keep a large stock with me at all times because my lips are always chapped in our dry Idaho weather. Plus my daughter has to always have some herself when she seems me applying lip balm, so she has one special just for her that is chemical free and safe for digestion.
Q: If I could live in one outfit for the rest of my life, it would be…. My pajamas! They are quite comfortable, and fit very well. I love being comfortable, yet at the same time, they are cute so I don’t feel so self-conscious!
Q: If you could offer one piece of advice to a new mom/dad, what would it be?
Don’t close your mind off to options when raising your child until you have done your research – even if you are advised by someone you trust! Always do your homework when it comes to your choices on raising your children. With my oldest boys, I refused to consider cloth diapers, certain brands of baby gear and even refused some methods of feeding but I regret it now.
I wish I had been more open minded and did more research on brands, products, and even parenting methods. Looking back, a lot of what I refused to use with my oldest boys are now my favorite brands/products and methods with my new daughter, because they have worked very well, saved us money and are more reliable. I could have saved myself a lot of money and headaches if I would have just done my research myself instead of listening to all the advice that strangers and even family and friends gave me.

Britney Major is a mom of three children under five years old and lives with her family in Idaho. Since she became pregnant with her third child, she has been passionate about cloth diapering and runs a video blog where she provides information and helpful tips to inspire other families to cloth diaper.
Q: How have cloth diapers changed your life?
Cloth diapers have changed my life by not making me feel guilty about diapering another baby. I have three kids under five and had been buying diapers for too long! When I found out I was pregnant with number 3 I vowed to never buy another pack of disposables. Aside from two small newborn packs of disposables that we received as a gift, we have only used cloth diapers on our daughter, who is now four months old. I think the diapers have paid for themselves already! We even went on a 1,800 mile road trip to see family and never once used disposables even on the road!
Q: This summer I am looking forward to….
CAMPING! With three little kids camping is always fun and adventures. We are hoping to go on a two week long camp trip this year and of course cloth diapering the whole time!
Q: The most unusual thing in my diaper bag or purse is…..
I am pretty crazy about keeping my diaper bag cleaned out and organized but I would say the most unusual thing would be coconut oil. I’m not sure if its unusual or not but I use it for EVERYTHING! I use it as moisturizer, diaper rash treatment and prevention, in my hair to make it shiny, as makeup remover – anything!
Q: If I could live in one outfit for the rest of my life, it would be….
A jersey knit maxi skirt and nursing tank top. This is pretty much my daily uniform – it’s so comfy and easy but at least it looks like I “tried” to get dressed.
Q: If you could offer one piece of advice to a new mom/dad, what would it be?
Enjoy your first baby and pregnancy. Having multiple children is wonderful but there is nothing like being able to devote all your attention to one chid. Once you have more, there will be no more afternoon naps with your new baby. Also, co-sleeping and breastfeeding have been a life saver. I have hardly had any sleep deprived days with this baby and I really think it has a lot to do with the fact that I am not getting up to make bottles all night.

Yes, I love the decision my husband and I made 18 months ago to cloth diaper our then-newborn. No, I’m not reconsidering anything. I still think cloth is one of the best gifts we can give our children. Cloth diapering gives babies a chemical-free start in life that doesn’t put them in environmental debt from birth. Plus, it gives mom and dad a few extra bucks in their pockets – honestly, what could be better?
However, just like anything else, there are certain aspects of cloth diapering that I am not especially fond of and I would be lying if I said I loved every minute of diaper duty.
Here are my top five:
I don’t like it when other moms act like I am some judge-y environmental guardian because I cloth diaper. As in, (sheepishly) “I know I shouldn’t be using so many paper plates, but I just can’t get out of the habit… I don’t know how you cloth diaper, I don’t think I could do it.” Well first of all, I think you could do it if you really wanted. Second, I am not here to judge anyone on anything. I choose to cloth diaper, but that does not make me an environmental angel of any kind and certainly not someone you need to live up to (I think most of us, by nature, are a little more eco-leaning, but I doubt any of us would make anyone feel guilty about it. I use paper plates from time to time too, Dude.)
I don’t like that I constantly have to be thinking about diapers. Every time I reach the top of my stairs, I do a mental check-up on where the diapers are in the wash cycle. I am constantly thinking: “Phew. Just stuffed and put away this morning, don’t have to worry about it”or “Dry diapers are ready to be stuffed, how long do I have until I will need them” or “Okay, my diapers are outside sunning. Wait. Is it raining?” or “Oops. Those diapers I washed this morning are still wet!” I guess even that little check-up has become such a habit for me that I don’t even realize I’m doing it, but it’s a constant refrain in my brain.
I don’t like that I can’t find a good cloth solution for overnights. My girl is a heavy wetter to begin with and still takes a bottle before bed. And she’s prone to diaper rash, so even doubling and tripling give us wet sheets, an unhappy baby and a tired mama. The only thing that holds it all at night is a disposable. One per day.
I don’t like that everyone’s cloth diaper wash routine has to be different. Many aspects of cloth diapering depend on your the type of water, washing machine and detergent you have. I wish there were consistent, foolproof instructions for washing diapers that worked for everyone. I mean, I get it. Water is different everywhere, our biology is different, washing machines are different. But wouldn’t it be great to just take out a manual as if it were a piece of Ikea furniture and it would work perfectly every time? Unfortunately, I think that’s why a lot of moms with great intentions end up giving up on cloth. They just can’t figure out a wash routine that works for them!
I don’t like that it’s still not mainstream. Cloth diapering has come so far in the last decade or so, but I still wouldn’t call it mainstream. And that disappoints me. I wish more people would be willing to take the leap into cloth, to put aside their doubts and just give it a try. The environmental benefits – for all of us – of even half of all babies with their tushies in cloth diapers would be considerable.
Everything we love has to have downsides, right? What would you change about cloth diapering if you could? Join our discussion on Facebook and let us know!

Angela V. is a mother of two who is passionate about knowing what kinds of products you are putting in and on your body. On her blog, Earth Faerie Mama, she writes about the importance of knowing what you are bringing into your home and letting your children eat off of and play with. She makes her own bath and body products, cleaners and prefers handmade toys – and of course, cloth diapers!
Q: How have cloth diapers changed your life?
Since using cloth diapers, I have been wanting to use less disposable EVERYTHING in our house. We now use cloth wipes, un-paper towels, cloth napkins, hankies and mama cloth! I try every day to be more “green.” I even started to blog about how much I love cloth diapers and being green.
Q: The first thing I do when I wake up is…
Change my little one out of his night time diaper. With cloth diapers he is able to stay comfortable in one diaper for 10+ hours with no leaks! Then I spend time with both of my boys.
Q: No matter how much time it takes, I always…
Fold and neatly put away each cloth diaper while admiring the patterns!
Q: The most unusual thing in my diaper bag or purse is…
Dice! You never know when they will come in handy.
Q: If I could live in one outfit for the rest of my life, it would be…
At first I wanted to say my pajamas…butI can’t help imagining myself in a dress, since I don’t wear one often. I would love to wear my soft summer maxi dress all the time. It’s comfortable enough to sleep in but cute enough to wear out.

It all started with this darn hard water that is now flowing through our pipes. I didn’t think having hard water for a year while they upgrade my town’s water filtration system would be a big deal, yet it seems to affect a different aspect of my life every day. I feel for all of you who deal with hard water all the time.
Last week, I was getting especially fed up with the brown/red ring on the inside of my toilet that was getting harder and harder to remove at each cleaning. I have the beginnings of rings on all of my toilets but the one in my kids/guest bathroom was especially bad. That toilet is older and it doesn’t get flushed quite as often as the other two toilets (especially when my four-year-old “forgets” to flush).
The ring was getting worse by the day and a friend – a disposable diapering friend, of course – suggested I use one of those pellets that goes into the tank and “cleans the toilet with every flush.” Usually, I think and research the heck out of things before doing them, but the ring was scaring me and she gave me one to try (a blue one!).
You know where this is going — without thinking about it, I dropped it into the toilet tank in the kids’ bathroom and went on my merry way.
Until.
Until I went to rinse out a poopy diaper in the toilet the next day and almost dunked the thing in the bright blue water before I realized what I was doing. Ugh! I guess you should know that the word “oops” comes out of my mouth on a daily basis. Or maybe hourly. But this was a big one. A big, blue, annoying oops.
Luckily, it’s not permanent; eventually the blue pellet will run out (I did try to fish it out and did get some of it before it broke apart). And obviously, I can still rinse out the dirty diapers, I just have to haul them down the hall to the master bathroom. Not a big deal, but a definite modification to my routine. I’m certainly looking forward to the day that the pellet runs out, the water in the toilet runs clear and my hard water ring returns. At least then I will be able to rinse out the diapers like I’m used to doing, conveniently, within steps of my daughter’s changing table and the laundry room.
I’m now thinking of finally installing my diaper sprayer after months of resisting, because I think the water for the sprayer comes out before it runs through the tank (still worried about what fun a curious four-year-old would have with that, though!).
Until I decide or until I’m sure the blue is gone, I will be carrying dirty diapers to my bathroom, leaving them on the counter there – grossing my husband out until I have a chance to dunk and swirl – and storing a second wet bag in the master bathroom. I suppose it’s my punishment for not thinking of all of this before that fateful blue “plop,” I guess.
Have you ever done anything that alters your cloth diapering routine? How did you deal with it? Any suggestions for the hard water ring around the toilet? Join us to discuss on Facebook!

We might not enjoy it, but we all do it. Yes, we’re talking about laundry. While everyone has to do wash at some point, cloth diapering parents probably do a little bit more laundry than the average person. Whether you have a strict laundry routine or you are still working on getting into a groove, getting those clothes clean every day can be a big job.
A few weeks ago, our Cloth Diapering Unwrapped blogger Sarah took a new laundry detergent option out for a spin. You might already be familiar with Eco Nuts, which are berries that grow in the Himalayas and naturally produce a soap that is eco-friendly and gentle on sensitive skin. Sarah said that not only to soap nuts clean her cloth diapers but “the great news is that soap nuts work incredibly well on regular laundry too. I’ve used them with my kids’ clothes and they come out buttery soft, fluffy and easy to fold. When I used them for the first time on my husband’s and my whites, he actually asked me if I’d changed detergents because he loved the way his undershirts felt.”
Because we want you to experience soap nuts too, our friends at Eco Nuts have offered to give one (1) lucky FuzziBunz blog reader a 100-load box of Eco Nuts soap nuts ($12 retail value). All you have to do to enter is follow the instructions below via Rafflecopter using Facebook or Twitter.
Good luck to all and happy laundry day!
