Monday Mama: Cloth Diapers are a Family Affair for Melissa S. and Jeniffer S.

Monday, August 20th, 2012

Melissa Smith and Jeniffer Smith are sisters-in-law and co-bloggers on Sisters in Cloth, a guide to cloth diapering, breastfeeding, babywearing, frugal and green living. Melissa, a mother of four, began cloth diapering her third child and eventually, inspired Jeniffer to do the same when her first baby was born. Together, they are passionate about living and parenting as naturally as possible — from homemade detergent to breastfeeding to…of course…using cloth diapers!

Q: How have cloth diapers changed your life?
JS
: Using cloth diapers has made me realize how much I depend on companies to provide things I could make at home. I’ve become much more “green” since switching to cloth, and I’ve learned a lot of ways to keep my family healthier. Cloth diapers have been my “gateway green!”
MS: With my first two children I spent so much money on disposable diapers, even buying the “cheap” diapers that didn’t work as well. We were a young, struggling family, and there were many weeks where the money I had to spend on diapers made me wonder how we were going to buy basic needs like groceries. It is so freeing knowing that no matter how tight the bank account gets, my babies have clean diapers, and that I’m not taking money from our food budget or electricity to provide them.

Q: The first thing I do when I wake up is….
JS
: Because I’m nearing the end of my pregnancy, I use the bathroom and then get breakfast and coffee made for me and my daughter.
MS: Normally nurse the baby next to me! As soon as my feet hit the floor I am on my way to brush my teeth, or I feel gross and can’t think. After that it’s time to start the coffee pot!

Q: No matter how much time it takes, I always….
JS
: Spend way too much time online. The only way I’ve found to curb it is to stay off completely. That leads to me tweeting and checking emails more on my phone than online, but it’s easier for me to get off of my phone than for me to get off the Internet!
MS: Nurse my baby when he asks for it. At eighteen months this isn’t as often as it used to be, but it still happens a lot, and I still sometimes feel like all I do is nurse all day long!

Q: The most unusual thing in my diaper bag or purse is…
JS: I have a sample of laundry detergent in my purse. It was put there after I opened some fluff mail at the post office, and I haven’t used it or moved it since!
MS: At the moment I think it’s a matchbox car. My three year old loves to hand me random toys while we are out and about and they end up living in my purse forever.

Q: If I could live in one outfit for the rest of my life, it would be…
JS: Jeans and a t-shirt. I go for comfort most days.
MS: I’m really not picky about clothes. I love flowy skirts, but I’m just as happy in jeans and a t-shirt. The one wardrobe item I absolutely wish I could wear every day of the year are my flip-flops! I wear them as far into the fall and winter as I possibly can, and at the first sign of spring they are back to full-time use.

Cloth Diapering Unwrapped: Sarah Examines Her Daughter’s Cloth Diaper Roots

Tuesday, August 14th, 2012

By the time she’s ten, my daughter probably won’t have any vivid memories of her cloth diapering years.  In fact, experts say that most people cannot recall much of anything substantial before they are three or four years old.  All I have to say is that it’s a darn good thing I’m taking lots of pictures.

Hopefully someday, she’ll look back at her baby pictures and notice her cute, fluffy bum poking out of her adorable outfits (though it will be a different experience from my own because my daughter has literally thousands of baby/toddler pictures while her mama probably has about 30.  Certainly makes me wonder how all of these digital pictures will affect the memory and recall of certain events for our children…But maybe that’s another discussion for another day).

Anyway, I know that she won’t remember actually being in cloth diapers, but I hope that somehow the knowledge that she was cloth diapered will remind her of a few things for the rest of her life:

  • The earth is our only home and it’s up to us to take care of it.  Big things, small things, it all makes a difference.  And the difference cloth diapering makes really adds up. She can be proud of the environmental commitment her family made.
  • She was a trendsetter.  When she’s reflecting on cloth diapering (perhaps it will be when she’s considering cloth diapering her baby), I hope – for all of our sakes – that cloth diapering is a much more mainstream practice.  She can tell her friends that she was cloth diapered back when wash-at-home pocket diapers were still in their infancy (or toddlerhood as the case may be) and they can ooh and aah and say that there is no way they would ever think about putting their baby in disposables!
  • (And along those lines…)  She is the next generation in a long line of cloth diaper wearers.  Her mama wore prefolds with pins and plastic pants in the seventies when disposables were all the rage, her grandfather was doted upon by his mother and childless aunts and probably never sat in a wet cloth diaper for more than one minute.  And that brings us back to countless generations before that who were also cloth diapered because there weren’t any other options. That’s some serious tradition.
  • Her mama loves her.  I’m not – AT ALL – saying that somehow cloth diapering mamas love their children more.  Not at all.  But I hope that she (and all children) will be able to look at the pictures of her in diapers and be able to see and feel the love that surrounded her in those early years.
  • It wasn’t easy, but we did it anyway.  There are so many wonderful benefits to cloth diapering that her dad and I chose to plop, rinse and swirl poop into the toilet and wash diapers in our laundry room all in the name of protecting her cute little behind.
  • She has our help with college. It maybe doesn’t compute dollar for dollar, but we did save money by reusing her diapers and we were able to start a college savings fund for her and her brother.  Truth be told, I think it’s so important to start saving for their educations when they are young, so we probably would have started a 529 anyway, but every bit helps!!

What do you hope your children take from their cloth diapering roots (whether they actually remember it or not!)?

FuzziBunz is in the News…and On Your Blogs!

You know that we love FuzziBunz cloth diapers. The only thing we love more than creating modern cloth diapers for today’s families is hearing how much you love your FuzziBunz cloth diapers…and seeing beautiful photographs of your babies wearing them!

Lately, we’ve read a few great blog posts about FuzziBunz cloth diapers and cloth diapering in general. We thought we’d “share the love” and tell you about them! Be sure to check out these blogs for more great advice, anecdotes and stories about cloth diapers, parenting, and much more!

On Itchy Little World, Jennifer blogs about using cloth diapers instead of disposables as swim diapers…and includes some great glamour shots of her daughter modeling a FuzziBunz cloth diaper in Crushed Berries.

On Coffee with the Mrs., Amy blogs about her experience with FuzziBunz cloth diapers and shares the simplicity of adjusting the size of a one size diaper. She said “The elastic in the waistband and legs is numbered with button holes. Simply button the elastic into place on the size number you’re going for and that’s it! I love this idea and I love that they sent back-up elastic with the diaper just in case.”

On Our Kids Mom, Lindsay blogs about the benefits of diapering her baby in FuzziBunz One Size Elite cloth diapers. She loves the one size adjustment on these diapers because there is “no more snapping down in the front and creating that unwanted bulk that she experiences with other one sized diapers.”

On Cloth Diaper Revival, Jenny shares a side-by-side comparison of the microfiber versus minky inserts. She found them both to be very absorbent…and of course, mentioned her love for her stash of FuzziBunz cloth diapers!

On Jodi Kendall’s Blog, Jodi included FuzziBunz cloth diapers in her “massive baby swag giveaway” that featured all of her favorite baby and parenting products.

Thank you to everyone who supports FuzziBunz!

Monday Mama: Spontaneous Mom Jackie S. Loves to Save Money on Cloth Diapers

Monday, July 16th, 2012

Jackie S. is a stay-at-home mom of four who loves every minute of her time with her “four monkeys,” even when life is mayhem! She and her husband Jeff are raising their children in Virginia and like being green whenever possible, which of course, means using cloth diapers on her eight-month old son. Jackie blogs about her life on Monkey Mayhem

Q: How have cloth diapers changed your life?
I save money. The money that used to go to buying disposable diapers can now go to other things like toys or clothes (or, my new obsession, more cute cloth diapers). Plus my baby’s butt is SUPER cute!

Q: If I could travel anywhere, I would go to….(don’t forget to tell us why!)
This is a hard one to answer. My first initial thought was “everywhere,” qw I’ve  only ever been on the East Coast here in the US, never been out of the country and the farthest north I’ve ever been was a trip to Delaware with my dad as a child. I love to see new places and would really like to go to Hawaii, Paris and Alaska. I wouldn’t mind going on a cruise and just visiting a bunch of different places.

Q: What do you think is the best invention of all time?
Digital Camera! I love being able to take picture after picture without worrying about running out of film. I have a DSLR with a speed shot that takes a ton of pictures in 30 seconds and I love it because I can get a shot I may not have been able to otherwise. I’ve caught a picture of my youngest mid sneeze, while on a film camera I would have used a whole roll of film in that 30 seconds!

Q: If I could live in one outfit for the rest of my life, it would be….
PJ pants (or jeans) and a T-shirt. I love to be comfortable and that is what I feel the most comfortable in and wear a majority of the time.

Q: If you could offer one piece of advice to a new mom/dad, what would it be?
Enjoy every minute. You will miss the sleepless nights, you will miss the baby who just laid there, you will miss the baby who just loves to look at your face and smile. I have 4 kids, oldest is 7 and youngest is 9months and there are things for each and every one of them I miss, for the older kids it’s just when they were babies and I could hold them, for my youngest it’s when he would just lay there and sleep in my arms forever. He still sleeps in my arms sometimes, but he’s heavier now!

Also, don’t worry about what other babies your baby’s age are doing…every baby is different. I know a baby who is a week older than my youngest who is doing a LOT more than him and that person is always asking me what Justin is doing and if he’s doing this or that. Even though he’s not, it’s OKbecause I don’t want him to grow up too fast. We know he’s doing things on his own time and everyone just enjoys having a little longer with each stage than other parents get. Once a stage is done, it’s done. Wish I had realized this with my first 3!

Monday Mama: Sarah Can’t Resist the Cuteness of Cloth Diapers

Monday, July 9th, 2012

Sarah F. is an army wife, as well as mom to eight-month old son Boston and two half-chihuahua/half-dachshunds that she adopted at only 7 days old.  She blogs at Dogs, Dogtags and Diapers about raising (and cloth diapering!) her son. She began cloth diapering when she discovered how much money she could save by forgoing disposables…and how much cuter cloth diapers looked on her little one!

Q: How have cloth diapers changed your life?
I didn’t start cloth diapering until my son was 3 months old. I had heard about them before, but never seen anyone use them in person, so always imagined that they were all prefolds with a pin. My close friend has a daughter who is one day older than my son and showed me her adorable cloth diapers, they were not at all what I was picturing! She let me borrow a few of them for a few days, and I instantly fell in love. That same day I put in a big order to a co-op and bought a few used diapers from a friend. It’s been an addiction ever since.

Cloth diapering has changed my life by saving us so much money. I have a fairly good sized stash of diapers, and I have only spent approximately what 2 months of disposable diapers would have cost us. Plus, they will last until he potty trains as well as for any following children. In the end it will be a HUGE savings. It’s also a good conversation starter – when it’s warm out, I like to dress my son in a cloth diaper as his “pants” with a t-shirt over it. So many people have asked me about them and complimented me and I’ve even convinced quite a few moms and moms-to-be to convert over to cloth diapering.

Q: If I could travel anywhere, I would go to…
If I could travel anywhere, I would go to Russia. All of the pictures that I have seen of the buildings in Moscow are just amazing to me and I would love to see them in person. Quite a few books that I have read are also set in Russia and that makes me all the more interested hearing about the great landmarks that are all over, especially in Moscow and St. Petersburg.

Q: If I could live in one outfit for the rest of my life, it would be….
If I could live in one outfit for the rest of my life, it would probably be just jeans, a blank tank top and my purple Converse sneakers. That is my favorite outfit and it’s very comfortable. I have had those Converse for quite a few years and they’ve seen better days, but I love them!

Q: If you could offer one piece of advice to a new mom/dad, what would it be?
Trust your instincts! There are so many people who are going to give you advice, whether you want it or not. Family, friends, doctors, strangers. But YOU are the parent, and you know best. No matter what books say, or what other babies are doing, or what your mom tells you, if something doesn’t seem right to you then you are probably right. Don’t measure your babies’ progress by those around you, as every baby is different. If the doctors are telling you to start feeding solids and you know your baby isn’t ready, trust your instincts! It applies in almost any situation regarding your child.

Cloth Diapering Unwrapped: You Know You’ve Been Cloth Diapering for Awhile When….

Wednesday, July 4th, 2012

I’ll admit, there have been times lately when I have a little bit of trouble coming up with topics to write about for this blog. It’s sometimes hard for me to believe because there was a time that cloth diapering was all I thought about, all I talked about and article topics seemed to be spilling out of my brain night and day.

I guess that’s how it is when something becomes completely ingrained in your day-to-day routines. I’m not thinking about cloth diapering quite as much anymore because I don’t need to. And because I’m not thinking about diapering very often, topics aren’t swirling around in my mind quite as freely. And that’s exactly how it should be.

So, here are the top five ways I know cloth diapering has become second nature:

1. It’s truly part of the routine. Like everything else with babies, cloth diapering quickly became part of the humdrum life of this mom (Yes, for all of you new-to-cloth moms out there or those still on the fence about cloth diapers wondering if cloth ever truly becomes easy…it does. And fast, I promise). The washing, drying, stuffing and adjusting that seemed so incredibly daunting at the beginning of the cloth journey is something I could do in my sleep these days.

2. I speak the language of cloth diapers fluently. I remember reading blog post after blog post trying to educate myself on cloth diapers before my daughter was born. I would have to google at least a word or two in each post just to understand what was being discussed. I’d sometimes say words like “PUL” and even “FuzziBunz” out loud to myself in front of my computer, just to see what they sounded like coming out of my mouth. It seemed like a foreign language and now it’s like I’ve taken an immersion course and can speak it like a native.

3. I’d much rather talk about my daughter’s latest word than diapers. Don’t get me wrong, I still love a good convo about cloth diapers (and still love to sell people on them!), but it’s not what I bring up during a lull at playdates anymore.

4. I feel like I’ve finally conquered the stink beast. When you cloth diaper, you are faced with challenging stinkies or leaks or rashes at least once (mine was a particularly long struggle), but when you fix the issue and get back to normal washing routines, it feels like you can take on the world. Just washing the diapers and knowing they will come out clean is such a nice, relaxing feeling. I’m more confident about diapers now after slaying the stinkies!

5. I don’t go on cloth diaper shopping sprees (as much) anymore. I think it’s also a product of knowing we are nearing the end of my daughter’s diapering years, but I’m not spending every naptime trolling cloth retailers for good deals, wondering what colors we need more of to complement this season’s wardrobe or dreaming about how to better organize the stash. Don’t get me wrong, I still buy a new diaper (or three) here or there and have started to rotate some old ones out, but I haven’t had to justify seven new diapers at one time to my husband recently. And I am happy with my stash. They are just our diapers. They work, they get clean and we are happy.

I guess that’s why I sometimes struggle with a fun, interesting or useful cloth diapering topic: its just part of life now. In a good way!

When did cloth diapering become second nature to you? And how did you know?

Monday Mama: Carissa Pulls Double Cloth Diaper Duty

Monday, June 25th, 2012

Carissa M. is a mother to 1 year old twins and a very energetic 3 year old. Though her days are packed with bottles, bathing and cloth diaper changing (she even schedules her showers!) she loves to spend time playing with her brood and sharing her daily experiences on her blog, Mommy2Multiples.

Q: How have cloth diapers changed your life?
Cloth diapering has changed my life in so many ways! Since they were born, my twins have never once had diaper rash and I credit that to their cloth diapers – especially for my son who has eczema and extremely sensitive skin. I think cloth diapers are just as easy to use as disposable diapers especially with pocket style cloth diapers.

Q: This summer I am looking forward to…
Taking the twins to the beach and Sea World for the first time. They love to explore and see new things as much as I love the look on their faces when they are really taking something in.

Q: The most unusual thing in my diaper bag or purse is…
I would say Hot Wheels cars, because for some reason my kids will stop crying and start playing with them whenever they are upset. I have learned I usually need to have at least a couple for entertainment or to stop meltdowns.

Q: If I could live in one outfit for the rest of my life, it would be…
Jean shorts, tank top and flip flops. When keeping up with my kids I am all about comfort — no more spending hours getting ready or making sure I am fashion-forward. By the end of the day, I usually wind up covered with some kind of food or stains on myself from my twins.

Q: If you could offer one piece of advice to a new mom/dad, what would it be?
No mommy or daddy is perfect and you’ll always learn new things that work for your family as you go along. You get into a routine and before long, it becomes second nature, whether it’s shopping with your kids or by yourself for groceries or making sure you have everything you need in your diaper bag for a day out. You learn as you go along.

Monday Mama: Cloth Diapering Opens a “Greener World” for Trista

Monday, May 21st, 2012

Trista A. is a stay-at-home mom of a seven year-old boy, a four year-old boy and a 13 month-old girl. She is married to her best friend of six years and loves discussing products, services and experience that she shares with her family on her blog, Anderson’s Angels.

Q: How have cloth diapers changed your life?
Cloth diapers have changed my life by opening my mind to a world of greener living. Thanks to cloth diapering I am now trying to help others be more aware of what products they use on their children.

Q: The first I do when I wake up is….
The first thing I do when I wake up is head for the bathroom and kick who ever is in there out so I can use it!

Q:  No matter how much time it takes, I always….
Make sure that my oldest son gets his homework done correctly and that all letters and numbers are facing the correct direction. He has ADHD and has a hard time with the flipping of his numbers and letters so we try to always go back over stuff to double or triple check if needed.

Q: The most unusual thing in my diaper bag or purse is…..
I am not sure that there is anything unusual in either bag unless you count crayons that I carry along for the kids to use for impromptu coloring.

Q: If I could live in one outfit for the rest of my life, it would be….
If I could live in one outfit it would be my Aeropostale sweat pants and a tank top. I love to be comfortable and that is my most comfortable outfit.
