Cloth Diapering Unwrapped: Get to know our cloth diapering mama and blogger

Cloth Diaper Blogger, Sarah

Sarah and her family of cloth diapered kiddos

Hi there!  I’m Sarah, a stay-at-home mom of two kids and a proud cloth diaperer. I am so happy to be sharing my experiences with you each week on this blog – I promise we’ll have fun!!

First, let me say that I am not an expert. At all.  I’m learning about cloth diapering (and parenting!) every single day. I still make mistakes and I’m not afraid to talk about them and hopefully learn from them.

My family is my most precious gift.  My oldest is a precocious little boy who is almost three and we welcomed a baby girl into our family in December 2010.  After being city-dwellers for almost ten years, we are happily living a very suburban life in a charming community outside Chicago, Illinois.  Over the past few years, my husband and I have made concerted effort to make changes in our life that leave a smaller footprint on the earth, create less waste and bring us more joy through simple, clean living.  I don’t pretend to be the greenest mom on the block (my composter is still in the box in the garage, folks), but I do try to make simple changes regularly – some bigger than others –that make us green-er than we were before.

Along with eliminating paper plates and most paper towels, cloth diapers are one of the bigger changes we’ve made.  I haven’t always been a cloth diapering mama.  My son has been potty trained for several months now, but for his first two years, his rear was covered with disposables the majority of the time.  When I was pregnant with my second, I did the research on cloth diapers and it just made sense.  My husband practically jumped on board when he found out about the money we would save and we were on our way.

I have to admit, once we made the decision to try it, I was a little nervous that I wouldn’t be able to make it work, that I wouldn’t like it, wouldn’t be able to handle the extra laundry, etc.  Because, let’s face it, I knew it would be me doing most of the changing, washing, choosing and maintaining the diapers!!  But in the three months we’ve been cloth diapering, it’s actually been much easier (and more fun!) than I anticipated.

Pocket diapers are our favorite type and FuzziBunz are, by far, our preferred brand.  I have a pretty modest stash – approximately 15 that are in regular rotation – and I am learning what works for our family as I go along.

So that’s our story.  Check in with me weekly to learn about my adventures in motherhood, cloth diapering and everything in between. I’ll share with you what I’m doing and learning along the way. See you next week!
