I swear I take every opportunity to tell people that we use cloth diapers. Whenever I can reasonably fit it into the conversation, I do.
Case in point: My lovely, grandmotherly next-door neighbor recently came over to visit and as she was leaving, she mentioned that she was going to Costco that afternoon and had a coupon for Huggies. She asked if I would like her to get me some diapers (let me pause here to mention how incredibly sweet this woman is. Anyway…). I said, “No that’s okay, because we actually use cloth diapers.” I don’t know what I expected her to do or say, but she high-fived me and said “good girl!”
“Actually, we use cloth diapers…” I hear myself saying that phrase over and over throughout my week. Pretty much every chance I get. Whether it’s to other moms at my playgroup, my neighbors, people at church, our daycare providers, a random babysitter or my 99-year-old grandfather, I somehow find a way to weave it into most conversations.
What can I say? I’m proud that we use cloth and I want to share it with as many people as I can. Maybe it’s the former marketing person in me, but I love to be an ambassador for the things I love. And I know that I love cloth diapers, so I guess it’s natural that I want to sing it from the rooftops. And from what I’ve gathered from the other cloth diapering mamas out there, I don’t think I’m alone.
Since I started cloth diapering in December, I have talked a lot about cloth diapers, shared experiences (“poop in your washer is really not that bad!”) and offered to lend diapers more times than I can count. So far, I don’t know if I’ve officially converted anyone, but I, like so many other cloth diapering families, am on a mission to spread the word. Until people get sick of me working cloth diapering into every conversation, that is! Then maybe I’ll move on to wearing an “ask me about cloth diapering” t-shirt or letting a super cute diaper accidentally fall out of my bag in front of other mom. “Oh this? Well, actually…”
